How to Build Your Resume

Centered at the top of the page should be your name, street address, email address, and phone number, like this, for example:

Jane Doe

1234 Minna Street, San Francisco, California 94321

janedoe@janedoe.com

555-111-2222

Then skip a space and put

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

centered on the page and capitalized.

Next, skip three spaces and list your qualifications. These will include all related skills, and any office experience you may have, including your home office.

Even if you don't have training or experience, you can "doctor" your Administrative Assistant Resume to make it totally acceptable to potential employers.

First, make a list of all the things administrative office workers do, such as organizing spreadsheets, alphabetizing, data entry, phone reception, copying, printing, internet research, and equipment maintenance, to name just a few examples.

Next, fashion a clear, concise cover letter describing your home office experience landing jobs online.

Never worked in an office or online? That's okay. There's no real harm in faking a little bit of work experience, as long as you are WELL able to do the job you are applying for.

We hesitate to call it lying.

After all, if you live somewhere, the chances are that you use a computer, open mail, pay bills, and handle paperwork.  Most of us DO have SOME experience performing administrative tasks. If necessary, mention your willingness to learn.

Here's how a list of qualifications might look on a professional resume for Administrative Assistants:

EDUCATION

(list each school like this)

Name of School

Degree Earned, if any

EMPLOYMENT

(list each job like this, starting with your most recent position)

From-To Dates

Name of Business

Responsibilities

Reason for Leaving

Employer Name / Employer Contact info

SKILLS

List anything you can do that is relevant to working in an office. Applicable skills include computer literacy, proof reading, letter writing, or any of the tasks mentioned above.

You can also list useful personal traits like punctuality, accuracy, typing speed, and attention to detail, for example.

Believe it or not, that's all there is to writing an outstanding professional resume for administrative employment in any corporate environment.
