Classification (a.k.a. taxonomy) is a way of sorting things into groups or categories, based on various shared characteristics. Modern classification is based on the work of Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778). Linnaeus was a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist who grouped species according to their shared physical features.
