The United States of America spans about 3.7 million (three million and seven hundred thousand) square miles, and is politically divided into fifty states and Washington DC. The fifty U.S. states are:



Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The mainland of the United States (also known as America's contiguous states), is made up of 48 states which are physically connected.

The mainland United States is bordered by Canada on the north, Mexico on the south, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to the east and west, respectively.

Measured in terms of total square miles, the United States of America is the third largest country in the world.

Please note that Alaska, as shown here, is not depicted to scale. In reality, Alaska, measured from east to west, is about as wide as the entire mainland United States.
