FAN - FILE


FAN: A device that moves air quickly, typically by way of a rotating set of curved or angled blades.

FANLIGHT: A semicircular window installed above a doorway, or above a rectangular window, creating the shape of an arch. Also known as a sunburst window.  

The fanlight shown below adorns the ceiling of the Art Deco room at the City Hall building in Buffalo, New York.

FACADE: A decorative fronting for a building, designed to look like part of the building. Facades enhance curb appeal by creating the illusion of a different building style, an extra floor, or extra square footage. 

Shown below, a house in Thailand is dramatically transformed by a facade.

FACE NAIL: A nail that is driven perpendicular to a surface.

FACED CONCRETE: Concrete covered with a thin mortar coating using construction equipment, to achieve a smoother surface.

FACING BRICK: The exposed brick on an exterior wall.

FARMHOUSE: Any architectural style whose design elements suggest the main living quarters on a farm. Typically a multi-story building featuring large rooms with high ceilings.

FASCIA: A band that runs horizontally around the edge of a roof, and attaches to the drain gutters.

FAUCET: A valve that controls the flow of gas or liquid. Also known as a tap.

F-CLAMP: A piece of construction equipment shaped like the letter F. This tool can be found in almost any home contractor's construction equipment box.

FEDERAL: An architectural style popular in North America during the 19th century. The Federal style is somewhat more boxy, angular, and austere than the Georgian style that preceded it.

FEDERATION: An early 20th century architectural style that originated in Australia. Somewhat similar to Edwardian, but splashed with Australian themes that may include tropical landscaping and a veranda. 

Shown below, Caerleon is a Federation style home in Bellevue Hill, a suburb of Sydney, Australia.

FELT: A textile material made by pressing and condensing natural or synthetic fibers together.

Felt can be used under roof shingles or under carpets, to name just two of the many uses for felt.

FEMALE: Any piece of hardware or construction equipment into which another (male) piece can be inserted.

FENCE: A physical border that surrounds all or part of a structure or a property.

FENCE JOINT: A type of joining where a horizontal piece runs through a hole in a vertical piece.

FERETORY: A small enclosure meant to accommodate a shrine.

FERROUS: A type of metal that is easily recycled, such as iron or steel.

FERRULE: A circular metal ring at the end of a braided or twisted length of cable.

FHA STRAP: A metal strap used for repairing or reinforcing walls. Shown below, an FHA strap, along with other pieces of steel construction equipment.

FIBERBOARD: A type of engineered paneling made from wood pulp.

FIBERGLASS: A strong, lightweight material reinforced with glass fibers. Fiberglass is often used in window panes.

FIELD MEASURE: Measurements actually taken of a property or structure, as opposed to the measurements indicated on the blueprints. A contractor's construction equipment always includes a very long tape measure.

FILE: A tool used for removing small amount of excess material from hard edges. Types of files include flat files, round files, half round files, triangular files, square files, diamond files, and crossing files, to name only a few.
