A traditional Haiku is a 3-line poem, with lines made up of  7, 5, and 7 syllables, respectively.

The standard Haiku theme is Nature, although the poem can be of any topic.

The Senryu poem is the Haiku's mirror image, with the three lines consisting of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, respectively.

The standard Senryu theme is Human nature, although the poem can be of any topic.

Both of these poetic forms originated in Japan.

Haiku and Senryu poems do not have to rhyme, but they can if you want them to. The last one shown here rhymes if you say it fully.

This poetic format is rife with variations, which allows you much freedom to explore.

In fact, many Japanese poets do not consider the exact syllable count of Senryu and Haiku Poems too very important.

In any case, shown below are three examples of traditional Senryu Poems, and three examples of traditional Haiku Poems.
