SHORT CIRCUIT - SITTING ROOM


SHORT CIRCUIT: A situation that occurs when hot wires touch neutral wires. Fuses and circuit breakers provide protection against the fires that a short circuit can cause. That's why every Home Plan should include a fuse box and circuit breakers.

SHOTGUN HOUSE: An architectural style in which the rooms of a home are arranged in a straight line, one behind the other, tandem style.

SHUTTER: A decorative wood bordering on the sides of an exterior window. Shutters were originally designed to keep out the elements before glass window panes were invented.

SHUTOFF VALVE: A mechanical device used for stopping the flow of electricity.

SIDELIGHT: A glassed vertical paneling installed adjacent to an exterior door.

SIDE SEWER: See Sewer Lateral

SIDING: The finished exterior covering of the outside walls of a building.

SILICON CARBIDE: A type of sandpaper.

SILL: 1) A horizontal wood beam bolted to the foundation wall to support the floor joists.  2) The horizontal piece at the lower edge of a window frame.

SILLCOCK: See Hose Bib

SILL PLATE: A horizontal structural component at the bottom of an exterior wall frame. Also known as a Mud Sill.

SILL SEAL: A foam insulation or filler installed between the foundation wall and the sill plate.

SILO: A large, cylindrical metal container designed for holding large quantities of grain.

Yet, some unique home plan ideas involve converting silos into interesting living spaces.

SINGLE HUNG WINDOW: A window with only one vertically sliding sash.

SINK: A basin, usually with an attached water faucet and a drain.

SINK WRENCH: A type of wrench specially designed to fix the areas around basins and sinks.
