India Independence Day is a holiday celebrated throughout the Indian subcontinent.
This holiday began on August 15th of 1947, and has been celebrated on or near that date ever since.
This was the day when India gained independence from the British rule, by way of patient, non violent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi.
Unfortunately, India's independence coincided with many violent riots and many thousand deaths. In fact, nearly 15 million people were displaced due to religious violence.
Here are the lyrics to Jana Gana Mana, which were translated into English back in 1919:
Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
Dispenser of India's destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sindh,
Gujarat and Muratha,
Of the David and Odisha
and Bengal;
It echoes in the hills of Vindhya
and the Himalayas,
Mingles in the music of Ganga and Yamuna
and is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea
They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise.
The saving of all people waits in thy hand,
Thou dispenser of India's destiny.
Victory, Victory, Victory to thee.
