LACQUER: A protective clear wood finish, often with a glossy sheen, although matte lacquers are also available. Lacquer is also known as varnish or shellac.

LALLY COLUMN: A round steel column used for structural support.

LANDSCAPING: The architectural design of a piece of land.
A landscaper knows which plants grow best in which types of soil and in what regions. A good landscaper also knows which plants are "deer proof," as well as the optimal placement for each landscaping design element.

LATCH: A piece of beveled metal hardware with a spring-loaded lever.

LATERAL: An underground trench and the service lines (phone, electricity, gas, sewer, and water) buried within it.

LATEX: A plastic product used for making high quality paint, among other things.

LATH: Narrow strips of wood attached to a frame of a building as a base for plaster, shingles, or tile work. Typically used for interior walls and ceilings.

LATHE: An electric tool that rotates a piece as it is being worked.

LATTICE: An open framework of criss cross wood or metal strips that form regular, patterned spaces. This popular landscaping design is also known as latticework, and is often used in trellises.
