LEACHING BED: The waste drainage receptacle of a home sewer system, located somewhere on the property. Included in many landscaping designs.

LEAD: A soft, heavy metal, used in the construction of railroad ties, among other things. However, lead is not legal for many construction and landscaping designs, due to the health risks associated with continuous exposure to the metal.

LED: Light Emitting Diode. The lowest voltage lighting system commercially available.

LEDGER: The lumber that frames the perimeter of a foundation wall and supports the wood sub floor.

LEDGER STRIP: A strip of lumber nailed along the bottom of the side of a girder.

LET-IN BRACE: A board applied diagonally to a notched stud, to lend extra support to an exterior wall.

LEVEL: A tool used for determining whether or not a surface is flat. Standard mechanical levels are designed with a floating liquid bubble that rests in the middle if a surface is true horizontal. Also see Laser Level.

LIGHT: The space in a window sash where a pane of glass belongs. Also, the glass pane itself.

LIGHT HOUSE: An oceanfront structure with a chamber at the top designed to emit a very high powered light. Light houses, now obsolete, were designed to guide incoming ships.
These days, ships are guided by computers, and many light houses are being converted into quaint, funky seaside homes and tourist businesses.
