The United States of America spans about 3.7 million square miles, and is politically divided into fifty states, several island territories, and Washington DC.
The 50 U.S. states are:
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
The mainland of the United States (also known as America's contiguous states), is made up of 48 states which are physically connected.
The mainland United States is bordered by Canada on the
north, Mexico on the south, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to the
east and west, respectively.
Measured in terms of total square miles, the United States of America is the third largest country in the world.
On most maps, Alaska is not depicted to scale. In reality, Alaska measured from east to west is about as wide as the entire mainland United States.
