Wealth Building Strategies

  • Start NOW! There’s NO time like it.

  • Pay cash whenever possible to AVOID debt.
  • Diversify. For the bottom 99% of us, diversification can be as simple as keeping your day-to-day living money in a checking account, and your saved money in a savings account. People who have more money can diversify within their area of interest. For instance, if you have $100,000 that you want to invest in real estate, you could buy one property, or you could diversify by investing $50,000 into each of two properties. No further diversification is necessary. According to Warren Buffet, “Wide diversification is only required when investors do not understand what they are doing.”
  • When accepting a job, focus only on the cash-in-hand. Ignore all job “perks” mentioned during your interview. Just nod and smile as some dopey employee-of-the-month drones on about pensions, incentives, stock options, and retirement funds. If any of these things happen, fabulous! But it is much more likely that you will switch jobs or the company will go bankrupt long before you reach retirement age. When applying for jobs, consider ONLY the guaranteed money that will arrive in your hand at the end of each pay period. Assume that’s all you’re going to get. You’re probably right.
  • When not working at your regular job, find extra ways to make money online. Get temporary gigs, ongoing jobs, or even Start A Business.
  • Set for yourself both long and short term financial goals when you Start A Business.
  • Stay mindful of the details of your earnings, savings, and spendings.

Once you have followed as many as you can of the suggestions outlined in these pages, you should have enough capital to Start A Business of your own.

After following all of the suggestions outlined in this book, your total savings after two years should be anywhere from $3,000 to $100,000 or more!

Think for a moment on how satisfying it will feel when you actually have all that extra money. Depending on your income level, following these techniques will save most people anywhere from about $100 to more than $5,000 each month.

Remember, nobody’s perfect, so we never follow all steps perfectly. Just do your very best and see what happens.

Perhaps you can use more helpful advice from some “Top One-Percenters” throughout history:

Don’t stay in bed, unless you can make money in bed.

-George Burns (performer, lived to be 100)

I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.

-Thomas Jefferson (one of America’s Founding Fathers)

Each day I get up and look through the Forbes list of the ‘Richest Men in America.’ If I’m not there, I go to work.

-Robert Orben (writer, still living and working at age 92)

It is better to have a permanent income than to be fascinating.

-Oscar Wilde (playwright)

I’ll sleep when I’m dead.

-Warren Zevon (rock star, poet)
